Amazon MGM Studios has dropped Luca Guadagnino‘s upcoming movie about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The Andrew Garfield-starrer will now be shopped to different studios. Experiences, originating in Puck on Friday, say the choice got here from Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios chief Mike Hopkins, who advised the Oscar-nominated filmmaker and producing group.
The timing is, nicely, fascinating: It comes only some months after the information that Amazon will make investments $50 billion within the synthetic intelligence analysis and deployment firm as a part of a “multi-year strategic partnership” that may speed up OpenAI’s consumption of Amazon Net Companies.
“We have the utmost respect and admiration for Luca Guadagnino as an award-winning filmmaker — not to mention a longstanding relationship that we hope to continue,” a spokesperson for Amazon advised THR. “We believe that Artificial will be better served if it were released by a different studio and are working closely with the filmmaking team to find the film a new home.”
Reps for Guadagnino, who is claimed to have virtually accomplished the movie, didn’t instantly reply to requests for remark from THR.
Described as a Social Community-esque characteristic shot in San Francisco and Italy, Synthetic stars Garfield as Altman in a narrative recounting the tumultuous interval at OpenAI in 2023 that noticed him fired and rehired in a matter of days. The supporting forged consists of Anora breakout Yura Borisov as Ilya Sutskever, an OpenAI co-founder who led the motion to eliminate Altman, Monica Barbaro as chief expertise officer Mira Murati, and Ike Barinholtz as Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk.
Whereas take a look at screenings in L.A. have boasted a “warm reception,” per Puck, the movie’s depictions of Altman and Musk usually are not believed to be wholly flattering.
The film, only announced last year, marked Guadagnino and Amazon MGM’s third collaboration, following After the Hunt, starring Garfield with Julia Roberts and Ayo Edebiri, and 2024’s Challengers.
Altman and Amazon boss Jeff Bezos are reportedly pleasant; the AI behemoth was among the many high-profile friends on the latter’s Venice marriage ceremony to Lauren Sanchez final 12 months.
