South Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong will probably be introduced with the Lifetime Achievement Award on the ninth Malaysia Worldwide Movie Pageant (MIFFest), which unveiled its full program lineup Tuesday in Kuala Lumpur.
The pageant runs July 18–25 and can current 65 movies from 35 nations and areas in 27 languages, together with two world premieres, one worldwide premiere, three Asian premieres, 12 Southeast Asian premieres and 28 Malaysian premieres.
MIFFest president Joanne Goh described the director as “a filmmaker whose work continues to resonate across cultures and generations through its honesty, compassion, and profound understanding of humanity.” The tribute will embrace screenings of two of Lee’s movies: “Peppermint Candy,” a reverse-chronological drama inspecting private and nationwide trauma, and “Oasis,” a romance centred on love, isolation and human dignity.
Chinese language actor-director Wu Jing will obtain the pageant’s Glorious Achievement in Movie Award. This system will display “Blades of the Guardians: Wind Rises in the Desert,” directed by Yuen Woo-Ping, along side the glory.
The ninth version opens with the world premiere of Malaysian characteristic “BAGA: Tomorrow Belongs To No One,” directed by Ariff Zulkarnain. Jury president is Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, joined by Taiwanese director Midi Z, Thai actor-producer Ananda Everingham, Hong Kong manufacturing designer Man Lim-chung and Malaysian actress Sharifah Amani.
Two new program strands make their MIFFest debut this 12 months. Korean Cinema: A Tradition in Movement presents “Bluefish,” directed by Lee Sang-hoon, alongside “Mr. Kim Goes to the Cinema,” directed by Busan Worldwide Movie Pageant founder Kim Dong-ho, who has served as MIFFest’s honorary chairman for 9 years. Russian Movie Week, introduced with the Russian Ministry of Tradition and Roskino, affords 5 titles starting from Andrei Tarkovsky’s “Andrey Rublev” and Mikhail Kalatozov’s “The Cranes Are Flying” to up to date productions together with “Sidney Lumet’s Birthday” and “Family Happiness.”
