Sandra Hüller Soaks Up 5-Minute Standing Ovation for ‘Fatherland’ as Oscar Race Starts Early in Cannes

Sandra Hüller takes a fraught and cathartic highway journey in Paweł Pawlikowski’s Cannes premiere “Fatherland”– and her GPS is about for subsequent 12 months’s Oscar race.

The viewers on the Grand Palais rewarded Hüller’s efficiency because the dutiful daughter of a post-war German literary genius with a 5-minute standing ovation, by Selection‘s count.

Hüller and her onscreen father Hanns Zischler brought a subtle but rewarding dynamic, as a family of expats traveling back to Germany to receive accolades for Zischler’s storied profession. Alongside the way in which, they confront the collision of fascism and communism, demise and remorse, and the price of legacy.

Hüller was overwhelmed by the reward on the Palais, her trademark stoicism breaking as the gang saluted her moments of emotional abandon — together with a tearjerker of a long-distance cellphone name and an explosion of rage at her narcissistic patriarch.

Shot in black-and-white — similar to Pawlikowski’s previous two works delving into the World Warfare II years and their aftermath — “Fatherland” revolves across the rapport between Nobel Prize-winning writer Thomas Mann (Zischler) and his daughter Erika, who’s an actress, author and rally driver, performed by Hüller. Set in the summertime of 1949 on the top of the Chilly Warfare, the daddy and daughter embark on a highway journey in a black Buick touring from the U.S.-dominated Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar throughout a Germany in ruins.

For this movie, Pawlikowski reunited together with his longtime filmmaking group, which incorporates the Oscar-nominated cinematographer Lukasz Zal, costume designer Aleksandra Staszko, editor Piotr Wójcik, manufacturing designers Katarzyna Sobańska and Marcel Sławiński and composer Marcin Marsecki.

With an 82-minute operating time, “Fatherland” is the shortest characteristic movie within the 12 months’s Cannes competitors lineup.
